Why You Resist Looking Inside Your Brain (And Why It's Keeping You Stuck)
Oct 23, 2025Have you ever had the experience where you SHOULD do something, but then you don't do it?
You know the way you're making your half square triangles isn't the most effective, but you rebel against yourself. You know you should get more gas, but you don't. Your finger is clicking "purchase" on fabric you don't need, or signing up for another block of the month when you're already overwhelmed.
One of my clients said to me today: "I have totally been resisting this one tool that I know really helps me, but I'm actually afraid to come face to face with whatever's in my brain."
She was talking about thought downloads. And if you can relate to any of these situations, I'm so glad you're here.
We Don't Have a Knowledge Problem. We Have a Feeling and Thinking Problem.
After losing 50 pounds without any traditional weight loss methods, I learned something revolutionary: we don't need more tracking apps, macros, or complicated plans.
We need to understand how our brain and body are connected.
But here's the thing – we're terrified to look inside our own minds.
Why Do We Resist the Very Tools That Will Help Us?
Why do we buy more fabric when we know we can't? Why do we say yes when the kids want to come visit and we're already overwhelmed? Why do we have these disconnects in our brain?
Let me tell you a family history story that explains everything.
The Story My Great-Grandpa Never Wanted to Face
I love doing family history work. My great-grandfather was a soldier from Scotland posted in Halifax. When he was 14, his mother Joanna Kelly died. He had two younger sisters, ages 5 and 12.
His father remarried a woman named Rebecca McDonald. Instead of taking his daughters, they put them in an orphanage.
My 14-year-old great-grandpa got on a bicycle and tried to ride to the World Trade Fair in St. Louis. He ended up working for farmers, then hopped a train with hobos who told him about opportunities in Alberta. When the train conductor came, the hobos pooled their money together and said, "Give the kid a break."
He ended up farming in Claire's Home, Alberta and never looked back.
I tracked his sisters' lives. They never got married. Never had kids. Died young working as servants in homes.
No wonder my great-grandpa left. He couldn't handle what was in front of him.
What Happens When We're Afraid of What We'll Find
When my client said she was resisting thought downloads, I asked her why.
"Because I don't know if I can handle what I find."
That's fair. I was devastated to learn someone in my own family would give up their two daughters. At the time I was doing that research, I had a 5-year-old and a 12-year-old with me. It was heartbreaking.
But here's what we discovered as we talked: The more she talked about it, the less scary it became.
I always say that shame is like a mushroom. Mushrooms grow in the dark and are fed poop. The more we can talk about what's really going on, the less shame we have. We neutralize it. We see, "Oh, this is why." And suddenly it doesn't seem so big, so hard, so difficult.
The Truth About Avoiding, Resisting, and Reacting
Whatever you avoid, resist, or react to gets bigger and bigger.
Whatever you feed grows.
It's like the boogeyman in the dark. You see shadows and it's so scary. But all you have to do is turn the light on and you'll see there's no boogeyman.
One woman in my membership said: "When I finally did the thought download, I felt so much relief."
The problem? When you avoid it, it just keeps growing.
Your Worth Is Not Tied to Your Results
Here's something I tell my clients all the time: When you accomplish your goals, you are not going to be an infinitely better person.
You're not going to be glowing. A police officer won't skip giving you a ticket because you finished your goal. Life still goes on.
Your worth is not tied to your results. Your worth is always 100%.
The 5 Pillars (And Where Most People Get Stuck)
In my membership, I teach 5 pillars:
- Weight Loss Science Is Simple
- Make Your Own Eating Plan and Troubleshoot It
- Feel Your Feelings Instead of Eating Them
- Take 100% Responsibility for Yourself (avoid the shame and blame cyclones)
- Build Self-Confidence
Most people get stuck on #3 and #4 because they're afraid to look inside their own minds.
What's Really Keeping You Stuck?
Why has weight loss been a struggle for you?
The sooner you can say, "Oh, I see my resistance. Thought download time," the sooner you can neutralize what's keeping you stuck.
On my coaching calls, I often start with: "Let's do a thought download on this." I give women a safe place to do it, and I guide them so it doesn't feel so scary.
Just like with my math fears – the more I could say, "Hey, I'm not very good at this. Can you help me?" the less afraid I had to be.
